There is so much negativity in the cosplay community. Cosplay

Autor:  Dorimukyatcha

"And i’m not even innocent of it.

Too often I see people judge other cosplayers at conventions, never to their face, but behind their back. It’s all so negative. And then I get to thinking, what do people see in my own cosplay? Do they judge me just the same? Do I judge people? The answer used to be a sad yes.

But everyone has had that first cosplay. Everyone started somewhere. Everyone made that shitty dress out of awful fabric, wore that dime store wig, but walked around a con proud as can be. And so many people, once they master their craft, forget that. I’ll never forget that. You wanna see MY first cosplay?

There you go. The picture ive been keeping from the internet for years. My FIRST home-made cosplay. Shirley Fenette from Code Geass (mutuality artbook). That was an altered slip from a Goodwill I worked on with my grandma. That vibrant ass wig? $10 on eBay and I thought I got SUCH A GOOD DEAL ON IT. I even added those cheap convention dealers room wings later on in the day.

What i’m saying is never forget your roots. Never forget where you started out. I used to be negative too. Now, whenever i’m talking to a cosplayer, I always make sure to point out at least one good thing they’ve done, because trust me, there’s always at least one. Even a small little detail, like a shirt, can encourage someone to get better. Keep the negativity to yourself, unless of course you’re asked for some constructive criticism, then always be constructive.

You will feel so much better once you do. Cosplay will suddenly become so much more fun again. It’s like starting all over again.

This is why I made and still co-run homestuckcosplayhelp. I want to help people learn. I want to help people put that image of themselves in cosplay into a reality. Cosplay is such a great community and a wonderful hobby, nobody should be denied it. The more encouragement you get, the better you become. Eventually, you can go from that, to this:

All it takes is support and a willingness to learn. And i’m still growing. I’m still remaking cosplays and bettering them (like my Vriska which i’m re-doing).

So I dare everyone reading this, talk to cosplayers no matter how “bad” the cosplay is. Make friends despite skill level. Tell them something encouraging, and give helpful, good-spirited advice where necessary. Help your fellow cosplayers grow and learn just like you did.

I also dare people to reblog this with their first cosplay, and the cosplay they are now most proud of. Especially if you’re a cosplayer who people look up to, like I know (for some reason) people do to me. Show support. Be positive. Remember your roots. And together we can make this community a bit of a less venomous place."
