der inspiration:
Brenda Ann Spencer war zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Tat 16 Jahre alt. Sie schoss ab 8:30 Uhr aus ihrem Elternhaus auf die gegenüberliegende Schule mit einem halbautomatischen Gewehr (Kaliber 22), das sie von ihrem Vater zu Weihnachten geschenkt bekommen hatte. Dabei wurden der Schulleiter Burton Wragg (53) und der Hausmeister Mike Suchar (56) getötet, außerdem acht Schüler und ein Polizist verwundet.
Während der Schießerei wurde sie von einem Journalisten angerufen, dem sie als Grund für die Tat angab: „I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day.“ Nach über sechs Stunden beendete sie die Schießerei und wurde verhaftet. Wegen zweifachen Mordes und Körperverletzung mit einer tödlichen Waffe wurde sie zu 25 Jahren Haft verurteilt.
Bei den späteren Gnadengesuchen behauptete Spencer, zur Tatzeit unter dem Einfluss von Alkohol, Marihuana und PCP gestanden und halluziniert zu haben. Sie sprach von einer Verschwörung, bei der ihr nach der Verhaftung bewusstseinsverändernde Drogen verabreicht worden sein sollen, damit sie die Tat gestehe. Außerdem sei sie von ihrem Vater sexuell missbraucht worden.
Die Aussage „I don't like Mondays“, die die Grundlosigkeit des Massakers unterstrich und weltweit für Aufmerksamkeit sorgte, inspirierte die irische Popgruppe Boomtown Rats zu ihrem großen Hit.
