Lily signed the letter. Then reread it. She sighted, inside herself she felt that she hadn't found the right words, but she hoped he would understand. Somewhere deep down in her, she knew he would understand. She sealed the letter and then put it into her drawer. There was no use in letting it lay around and having James find it. Then there would just be a huge discussion, why she still wanted to be friends with Severus. James never understood why she had cultivated this friendship over years, even though they had been in different houses, even though they had been subject to rumors all the time at Hogwarts. But he was the one who first told her about the wizard world. She remembered as if it had been yesterday when he had told her that she was a witch. She laughed thinking about it. Petunia and she hadn't been very nice to Severus, but she had met him again and he had told her everything, about Hogwarts, about the Ministry of Magic, about Diagon Alley, about Askaban. She sighted and then got up. It was time to cook dinner.

When they first had heard that Severus switched sides and now, was a spy, James had laughed at Dumbledore for trusting him. But she, Lily, she had been more than happy and had trusted Dumbledores word at once. First there had been a fierce discussion between the Marauders. They didn't trust him and they were afraid the wrong things might leak out. When she had mentioned that Severus might have changed that he might have come to understand, Sirius had almost jumped at her, yelling that you never can trust someone who was a Death Eather. So she kept quiet, not wanting a fight. Once she had talked to James about it alone. The whole talk had gone surprisingly well, until she had considered inviting Severus over. James had looked at her in shock and amazement, asking her, if she had forgotten, what he had called her.

She sighted again and looked out of the window. It was getting darker. Somehow it felt funny not to have any children ringing on their door, asking for sweet as they had done the last year. After all, it was Halloween.

She went out of the room, hoping that Peter was going to drop by that evening so that she could send the letter. James was playing with Harry, colored smoke puffs erupted from his wand and Harry was graping for it. “Bedtime, my lovely boys”, she said, smiling. James handed her their little boy and she walked upstairs holding little Harry. “My big one, has Daddy played with you?” She still smiled holding their little child, all their love. And that love was strong. She still couldn't figure out how that had happened. One day James had stopped being such a jerk and all of the sudden they were dating. Now they were happily married and she had never felt for anyone such strong love.

She was just laying Harry into his bed, singing a song for him, when she hurt the door being burst open. Then there was James voice: “Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off-”

Lily saw the green light and screamed. She knew what had happened, before even realizing what was going on. She moved all the things she could grab in front of the door. 'Harry! I have to protect Harry!' She took him out of his cot, held him tight. “Everything will be okay”, she whispered, tears in her eyes for her loved one.

Then, faster then she had feared, he stood in front of her. His cloak covering his white face and his red eyes. She put Harry back in his cot and spread her arms. 'Protect Harry.'

She looked at him fearing not for her own life, which wasn't worth much anymore, but for Harrys, her sons.

“Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!”

“Stand aside, you silly girl... stand aside, now...”

“Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead-”

“This is my last warning-”

“Not Harry! Please... have mercy... have mercy... Not Harry! Not Harry! Please – I'll do anything-”

“Stand aside- stand aside, girl-”

Then the green flash filled the room once more and all was black.
