They never got along too well, resulting in constant fighting and leaving their son on his own a lot. After the divorce, Shigeru started seeing Miyako again, who’s his teenage sweetheart. This puts their children in a weird position with Gou joking that they all could have been siblings, which Sousuke and Rin do not find funny. The Matsuokas’ family cat Steve likes Shigeru a lot, which annoys Rin a bit since Steve isn’t too fond of him. Shigeru made the decision to retire at the age of 60 and hand over his business to his grandson Itoe, whom he trained to be his successor (since Sousuke didn't want to work in his father's business and instead concentrated on swimming & coaching). He then opened a bar in Tokyo, which is thriving and he enjoys interacting with the guests there. He is a sociable butterfly and a natural charmer. Still flirting a lot, Shigeru has no intentions to cheat on Miyako though; she’s the love of his life after all. With Ilona, he wasn’t so faithful, which was one of the reasons their marriage failed. His relationship to Sousuke is a bit complicated due to them never actually bonding, but they get along fine. He also really likes Rin and Gou, as well as his grandchildren Akaya and Itoe.
